The Philippines is preparing to open a new chapter in infrastructure and economic development, and it’s taking off in Bulacan. The New Manila International Airport (NMIA), now under development in the town of Bulakan, is set to become one of the country’s most important infrastructure projects. With construction on its first phase scheduled to begin in 2026, NMIA is expected to ease air traffic congestion in Metro Manila, improve connectivity, and support long-term regional growth.

A Next-Generation Airport

The project is led by San Miguel Aerocity Inc., under a 50-year concession agreement with the national government. The airport will be built in stages, with the first phase breaking ground in January 2026. This phase will include two runways, a modern passenger terminal, and core infrastructure designed to handle up to 35 million passengers annually. When fully completed, NMIA will operate four runways and accommodate as many as 100 million passengers each year, making it one of the largest airports in Southeast Asia.

Supporting NAIA and Expanding Capacity

Rather than replacing Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), NMIA is designed to work alongside it. NAIA is currently undergoing a ₱170.6-billion rehabilitation to improve capacity and passenger experience. Once the upgrades are complete, NAIA will be able to handle up to 62 million passengers per year and support 48 flights per hour. Together, the two airports will create a more efficient and resilient aviation system that can meet growing travel demand.

Connectivity and Access

NMIA’s location—just 18 kilometers from SM North EDSA and 15 kilometers from Balintawak—makes it highly accessible to Metro Manila. Key infrastructure projects are underway to support this access, including a six-lane highway that will connect the airport to the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and a transport terminal to accommodate provincial buses and public transport.

There are also proposals to extend the MRT-7 line, which is currently being built between Quezon City and San Jose del Monte, Bulacan. If approved, this extension would provide an efficient rail connection to NMIA. While still in the proposal stage, this added link would significantly improve passenger convenience.

More Than an Airport

NMIA is expected to do more than improve air travel. It is also seen as a driver of economic growth and regional development. The project is forecast to generate over one million direct and indirect jobs and pave the way for an airport city—a planned community with spaces for businesses, residential developments, and industrial use.

As accessibility improves and supporting infrastructure takes shape, NMIA is expected to attract new investments in sectors such as logistics, hospitality, real estate, and manufacturing. Its long-term impact could reshape land use patterns and turn Bulacan into a key growth center north of Metro Manila.
